Geology for the sea and business

We invite you to the Polish Geological Survey Forum, "Geology for the Sea and Business – Strategic Directions of the Polish Geological Survey's Activities," dedicated to the role of modern geological research in the development of the maritime economy.

The event will provide an opportunity to learn about the current tasks of the Polish Geological Survey, supporting infrastructure security, spatial planning, and the utilization of seabed resources.

The Forum brings together the scientific community, administration, and business sectors, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and partnership building.

Participation in the Forum offers a chance to better understand the geological conditions of maritime areas and the practical applications of geological data in key offshore projects in Poland.
Topics

Coastal zone under investment pressure

The coastal zone is an area of exceptional natural, social, and economic value, yet extremely sensitive to investment pressure. It is particularly susceptible to the impact of both morphological and geological factors and intense human activity. What are the key challenges related to spatial planning? Is it necessary to consider natural hazards in decision-making processes? What can a sustainable approach to development that takes into account the geological specificity of coastal areas change?
Topics

Marine geological cartography as a spatial planning tool

Given the growing pressure to develop marine space—for energy, environmental protection, and tourism, among other purposes—making decisions based on reliable spatial data is crucial. Marine geological cartography, based on studies of the seabed and its substratum, provides crucial information supporting sustainable planning. Such geological data are already being used, among other things, to locate wind farms, designate aggregate extraction areas, and identify ecologically sensitive zones.
Topics

Collecting and sharing geological information for marine areas

Geological data from offshore areas play a key role in the planning and implementation of offshore investments. This includes information such as seabed structure, sediment thickness, tectonic structures, subsurface stability, mineral resources, and ongoing geodynamic processes. Specialized platforms for exchanging this data operate in Poland and Europe, highlighting its crucial importance to a wide range of stakeholders – from scientific institutions and public administration to the private sector.
Topics

Groundwater in the coastal zone – the key to the safe functioning and development of the country

The coastal zone is characterized by significant hydrogeological diversity, affecting the availability and quantity of groundwater resources. What are the conditions of their occurrence and the threats associated with natural factors and human activity? What is the significance of salinity in coastal aquifers? What is the role of long-term monitoring in spatial planning and the protection of water resources in such areas?
Topics

Geological and Engineering Databases for Polish Maritime Areas

What is the concept of the Engineering Geological Database for Polish Maritime Areas (BDGI-POM), integrated with the national Engineering Geological Database (BDGI), which has been in operation since 2013? What is the importance of developing a 1:100,000 scale engineering geological map for better understanding subsurface conditions in the Polish maritime zone? Data integration and cartographic presentation are essential tools supporting the planning and implementation of maritime investments.
Topics

Documenting geological and engineering conditions for offshore wind farms

What is the importance of detailed identification and documentation of geological and engineering conditions for the foundation of offshore wind farm structures and cable routes? Why is appropriately designed ground investigations crucial for properly assessing the stability and safety of an investment? The Polish Geological Survey has prepared a guide for investors operating in the maritime economy. This publication provides practical support in planning and conducting geological surveys in compliance with applicable regulations and technical standards.
