Polish ports in the expansion phase – hundreds of millions for infrastructure and green energy

The Port of Gdynia is investing in development in 2025

The Port of Gdynia Authority will allocate PLN 449.8 million for investments and PLN 31.5 million for repairs and maintenance in 2025. This expenditure is part of a three-year, PLN 1.3 billion program that includes the modernization of the quays and the expansion of Turning Basin No. 2. Once the work is completed, the port's handling capacity will increase to 47 million tons per year, and in the future – after the construction of the Outer Port – to 65 million tons. In 2024, Gdynia handled 26.9 million tons of cargo, an 8.5% decrease compared to the previous year. The decrease was mainly related to coal, coke, grain, and liquid fuels.

Coastal regions together for the Baltic Sea

Three coastal voivodeships have proposed actions to support the Polish Presidency of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, focusing on security, energy transition, port development, and ecology. Experts emphasize the need for international cooperation in environmental protection and energy security. Growing climate and geopolitical threats make joint action by the countries in the region imperative.

BC-Wind: Baltic Sea bottom research before wind farm construction

Ocean Winds is conducting the next phase of research for the BC-Wind offshore wind farm, using the Ocean Marlin vessel to search for unexploded ordnance and obstacles along the route of the future cable support. Simultaneously, the Mainport Edge vessel was checking the seabed for boulders, and Sulmara is using advanced sonar and magnetometric systems. The aim of the research is to ensure the safety of installing the cables connecting the farm to the mainland. The project, with a capacity of up to 390 MW and located 23 km offshore, will power approximately 488,000 households, and energy production is expected to begin in 2028. The installation port for the project will be Terminal T5 in Gdańsk.

The future of the "Orka" program

A supplier for new submarines for the Polish Navy is expected to be selected by the end of 2025, but no decision has yet been made. Currently, only the nearly 40-year-old ORP Orzeł remains in service, which poses challenges in maintaining combat and training capabilities. One option is the Italian proposal from Fincantieri, which includes U212NFS submarines and the possibility of faster acquisition of a submarine already under construction or a bridging solution in the form of older submarines. The key criteria will be not only modernity but also speed of delivery and ensuring staff continuity. Bidders from France, Spain, South Korea, Germany, and Sweden are also vying for the contract.
